Deno was a renowned professor of chemistry at Penn State University and an avid horticulturist with interest in seed germination. Dr. Deno conducted germination research on plant species derived from more than 150 families, 800 genera, and 2500 species. He studied the effects of temperature, oscillations in temperature, light, storage conditions, seed age, outside exposure during cold months, and treatment with GA3. He worked with species collected worldwide. Over a period of many years, he self-published several books that provided summaries of his research. A series of monographs have been prepared that provide a summary of Dr. Deno’s research reports for plants native to Canada, the United States, and Mexico. This first article is inclusive of species with taxonomic binomials beginning with the letters A and B.
