AB  - In this article, I highlight several recent efforts in Oregon that promote gardening with native plant species. Stream-side Gardening provides information to landowners and landscapers on landscape practices near streams. Oregon WaterWise Gardening helps people understand the plants (including native plants) that conserve water in landscapes. GardenSmart Oregon, a new collaborative effort, informs the public about invasive landscape plants and offers noninvasive alternatives, including native plants. I have been, and continue to be, personally involved in each of these efforts, working with the Oregon State University Extension Service to educate and inform the public on these topics. Native plant gardening is an important trend throughout the US and worldwide. Interest in using native plants is increasing, reflecting emphasis on restoration of natural areas; concern for resource use, especially water; and a desire to plant noninvasive species in home landscapes.
