Abstract

The USDA Agricultural Research Service (ARS) announces the release of Charleston Peak Germplasm slender wheatgrass (Elymus trachycaulus (Link) Gould ex Shinners [Poaceae]) as a selected class, genetically manipulated track pre-variety germplasm selected directly from collection D-3269. This collection is unique in that it exhibits short rhizomes not typically found in standard slender wheatgrass and appears to have the ability to accumulate cadmium (Cd) from the soil in its aboveground tissue. In addition, Charleston Peak is currently the only slender wheatgrass plant material that originates in the Great Basin. Charleston Peak Germplasm was collected near Charleston Peak, Clark County, Nevada, at 2438 m above sea level on 30 July 1983 and designated as D-3269 within the ARS Collection of the Triticeae grasses at Logan, Utah. This germplasm is intended for use on arid and semiarid rangelands for revegetation in the Great Basin and Intermountain Region of the western US.
